The Boston Red Sox have optioned starting pitcher Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester following a disastrous start against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday. Bello was pulled after failing to record a single out in the first inning, allowing six runs on four hits and two walks. The outing capped a brutal two-month stretch for the right-hander, who saw his ERA balloon as his command and velocity both declined.
The decision to send Bello down came after his post-game comments drew additional scrutiny. When asked about his performance, he offered responses that did not sit well with the coaching staff or front office, sources indicated. The Red Sox have been patient with the 25-year-old, but the combination of poor results and questionable accountability forced their hand.
To address the immediate hole in the rotation, Boston made a trade to acquire a veteran reliever. The move adds depth to a bullpen that has been overworked lately. The new arm is expected to join the team in time for the weekend series. Bello will look to reset in Worcester and work on regaining the form that made him a promising piece of the club's future just a year ago.
