From Meal Money to Betting Money: How Sports Wagering Has Become a Campus Staple at Tulane

With one parlay bet, you can turn the $20 your mom gave you for food into $200. Enticing, right? This mindset is common on college campuses across the country. 67% of students living on campus participate in sports betting, and Tulane University is no exception.

"There's no barrier to entry for these gambling sites. It's just too easy," said one Tulane junior who asked to remain anonymous. "You see your friends winning, you hear about someone hitting a big parlay, and suddenly the $20 in your pocket feels like it should be working for you."

The normalization of sports wagering has transformed campus culture at Tulane. What was once a fringe activity confined to off-campus sports bars or underground pools has become a visible, everyday habit. Students now openly discuss their bets between classes, check live odds during lectures, and celebrate or commiserate over results in dining halls.

Mobile apps have accelerated this trend dramatically. With geolocation technology allowing betting within state lines, Louisiana's legalization of sports gambling in 2021 opened the floodgates. Tulane students, many of whom are away from home for the first time, find themselves with disposable income and easy access to platforms that aggressively market to young adults.

The financial stakes are real. University counselors report an uptick in students seeking help for gambling-related stress, missed tuition payments, and mounting credit card debt. What starts as a $20 bet can spiral quickly, especially when chasing losses becomes a compulsion.

Yet the allure persists. For many students, sports betting offers a thrill that feels like a shortcut to financial freedom in an era of rising costs and uncertain job prospects. The line between harmless entertainment and dangerous habit grows thinner with each notification from a betting app.
