New England Patriots’ Defense Still Has One Major Blind Spot

The New England Patriots put a lot of work into their defense this offseason. They already had a unit that ranked fourth in the NFL in points allowed last year. They added pieces around cornerback Christian Gonzalez, brought in Carlton Davis, and signed Milton Williams. They also reshaped the linebacker room and continued building the fast, physical style that head coach Mike Vrabel wants to see.

But there is still one major blind spot.

For all the upgrades up front and on the edges, the middle of the field remains a concern. The Patriots did not add a proven, rangy safety to pair with Kyle Dugger. They also did not bring in a true coverage linebacker who can handle tight ends and running backs in space. Against modern offenses that spread the field and attack the seams, that is a problem.

Last season, the Patriots struggled at times against quick passing attacks and athletic tight ends. That issue has not been fully solved. While the pass rush should improve with Williams and a healthier front, quarterbacks will still have quick outlets over the middle. If the Patriots cannot cover those routes consistently, their defense will give up more big plays than it should.

Vrabel's system relies on pressure and discipline. But without a reliable answer in the middle of the field, the defense still has a hole that good offenses will try to exploit.
