The Los Angeles Rams and head coach Sean McVay are quietly preparing for a major strategic shift that could redefine the team's identity by the 2026 season. While McVay has long been known for his innovative, wide-zone running game and play-action passing, league insiders suggest the Rams are planning to move away from several core concepts that have defined their offense for nearly a decade.
On offense, the Rams are expected to reduce their reliance on 11 personnel (three wide receivers, one tight end, one back) in favor of heavier sets that feature multiple tight ends and fullbacks. This shift would align with a growing trend across the NFL toward power running and play-action off condensed formations. The change may also signal a move away from the quick-game, horizontal passing attack that has been a McVay hallmark, instead emphasizing vertical routes and downfield shots off play-action.
Defensively, the Rams are anticipated to transition from their longtime 3-4 base alignment to a more versatile 4-3 front. This would allow them to better utilize edge rushers who can put a hand in the dirt, and it could mean a reduced role for off-ball linebackers in coverage. The secondary, meanwhile, may see a shift from heavy zone coverage to more man-to-man principles, particularly on early downs.
These changes are not expected to be abrupt. McVay has historically preferred gradual evolution over wholesale reinvention. But with key veterans aging and the salary cap requiring tough roster decisions, the Rams appear to be laying the groundwork for a new era. The 2026 season could mark the most significant schematic departure since McVay took over in 2017.
