Schlittler shines as Yankees take Subway Series opener

Cam Schlittler made another strong case for his Cy Young candidacy, leading the Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Mets in the first game of this year's Subway Series. The right-hander struck out nine over seven innings, allowing just two runs on four hits while walking none. His command was sharp from the first pitch, and he kept the Mets' lineup off balance with a mix of fastballs and breaking stuff.

On the other side, the Yankees' offense finally broke through against former teammate Clay Holmes. Holmes, now closing games for the Mets after leaving the Bronx in free agency, entered in the eighth inning with a one-run lead. But the Yankees quickly turned the game around. A leadoff double by Anthony Volpe set the stage, and after a sacrifice bunt, Aaron Judge delivered a two-run single to left. Gleyber Torres added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

The bullpen held firm after that, with Tommy Kahnle working a clean eighth and Jonathan Loaisiga closing it out in the ninth for his 12th save. The win improves the Yankees' record to 42-28, keeping them atop the AL East. Schlittler, now 9-1 with a 2.11 ERA, continues to be the anchor of the rotation.
