A full slate of recreation opportunities and college and prep sports competitions is set for the first ten days of August. The calendar runs from Friday, July 31 through Sunday, August 9, offering something for athletes and fans of all ages.

On the recreation side, several community centers will host open swim sessions and family fitness walks. The annual youth triathlon is scheduled for Saturday, August 1 at the municipal pool complex, with start times beginning at 8 a.m. Registration remains open through Thursday evening. Later that week, the city parks department will hold a twilight kayak tour on the lake, limited to 20 participants.

In prep sports, the high school football season kicks off with a series of scrimmages on Friday, July 31. Local teams will face off in controlled settings to tune up for the regular season. Girls volleyball tryouts begin Monday, August 3 at most area schools, with schedules posted on individual school websites. Cross country runners will compete in a preseason meet on Saturday, August 8 at Riverside Park.

College athletics also feature prominently. The state university softball team opens its fall exhibition schedule on Sunday, August 2 with a doubleheader against a regional rival. Meanwhile, the men's soccer team hosts a friendly match on Tuesday, August 4 under the lights. Both events are open to the public with free admission.
