Tigers' Gleyber Torres: Reinstated, batting leadoff Tuesday

The Detroit Tigers activated second baseman Gleyber Torres from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, immediately inserting him into the leadoff spot for the series opener against the Boston Red Sox. Torres had been sidelined since late May with a strained oblique, an injury that forced him to miss the last three weeks of action.

Manager A.J. Hinch confirmed the move before the game, noting that Torres is fully cleared and ready to handle a full workload. The decision to bat him first reflects the team's need for a consistent on-base presence at the top of the order. Torres was hitting .267 with a .340 on-base percentage before the injury, with four home runs and 18 RBIs in 45 games.

To make room on the active roster, the Tigers optioned utility player Andy Ibanez to Triple-A Toledo. Ibanez had been filling in at second base and hit .235 with two homers during Torres' absence.

Torres' return is a boost for a Tigers lineup that has struggled to generate consistent offense, ranking near the bottom of the American League in runs scored over the past two weeks. The 27-year-old infielder signed a one-year deal with Detroit in the offseason after spending his first seven seasons with the New York Yankees, where he was a two-time All-Star.

First pitch at Comerica Park is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET.
