49ers bubble watch: One rookie whose job is in jeopardy

The San Francisco 49ers are deep into their training camp grind, and while the competition for starting spots is heating up, the battle for the back end of the roster is just as intense. One rookie whose early performance has raised some eyebrows for the wrong reasons is undrafted cornerback Enrique Cruz Jr. Coming into camp with high hopes and a chip on his shoulder, Cruz has struggled to find his footing against the team's veteran receivers and the quick passing schemes the coaching staff is implementing.

Sources close to the team suggest that Cruz has been targeted heavily in one-on-one drills and has lost more reps than he has won. His technique at the line of scrimmage has been inconsistent, and he has been beaten on double moves more than a few times. While the physical tools are there, the mental processing speed required for the 49ers' complex defensive system appears to be a hurdle he has not yet cleared. With the team's depth at the cornerback position being one of the strongest on the roster, Cruz's margin for error is razor thin.

The coaching staff has always preached competition, but they also need players who can contribute on special teams immediately. Cruz has not made a significant impact in that phase either, which could seal his fate. He will need a strong showing in the upcoming preseason games to change the narrative. Otherwise, he is likely looking at a practice squad opportunity at best, or an early release when final cuts are made. The clock is ticking, and Cruz needs to show the coaching staff that he belongs before it is too late.
