The Denver Broncos have decided not to sign quarterback E.J. Warner, the son of Hall of Famer Kurt Warner, following his participation in the team's rookie minicamp this past weekend. While head coach Sean Payton had positive things to say about the young signal-caller's performance, the organization ultimately opted not to offer him a contract at this time.
E.J. Warner, who played his college football at Rice University after starting his career at Temple, was one of several tryout players brought in to compete alongside the Broncos' drafted rookies and undrafted free agents. Payton noted that Warner showed good instincts and a strong understanding of the game, traits that likely come from growing up around his father's legendary NFL career. However, the coach also indicated that the team is currently comfortable with its quarterback room and did not see an immediate need to add another arm to the roster.
The decision does not completely close the door on Warner's NFL aspirations. Teams often keep tabs on tryout players for future opportunities, whether as injury replacements or additions to the practice squad later in the season. For now, Warner will continue to work out on his own and wait for another chance to prove he can follow in his father's footsteps. Kurt Warner, a two-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion, has been vocal in supporting his son's journey, but the path to the professional ranks remains a steep climb.
