Defensive line showing “tremendous progress” for Nebraska football in camp

One of the biggest questions for new defensive coordinator Rob Aurich heading into the season was the state of his defensive line. That unit, which lost key contributors from a year ago, was seen as the biggest potential weak spot on that side of the ball. But through the first few weeks of fall camp, the picture is starting to look a lot brighter.

Aurich said the group has shown "tremendous progress" since the start of practices. He pointed to the way the linemen are absorbing the new scheme and playing with better pad level and hand placement. The coach also credited the increased depth along the front, which has allowed for more rotation and kept guys fresher during long drills.

Several younger players have stepped up and are pushing for playing time. That competition has raised the level of the whole room. The veterans are also setting a good example, according to Aurich, and the communication up front has been noticeably sharper in recent days.

There is still work to do before the season opener, and the real test will come against live competition. But the early returns are encouraging. If the line can keep building on this momentum, it could turn a perceived weakness into a solid strength for the Blackshirts.
