With the trade deadline now in the rearview mirror, front offices across baseball are holding their breath. Some swung for the fences, others made quiet, under-the-radar moves, and a few might have simply missed the mark. One of the most intriguing swaps saw the Pittsburgh Pirates acquire hard-throwing right-hander Camilo Doval from the San Francisco Giants. The question is whether this is the move that finally stabilizes a bullpen that has been a season-long headache.
Doval, who saved 44 games for the Giants in 2023, has been anything but consistent this year. His command has wavered, and his slider has lost some of its bite, leading to a bloated ERA and a demotion from the closer role. The Pirates are betting on a change of scenery. They are hoping that a fresh start in the National League Central, away from the pressure cooker of San Francisco, can help him rediscover the form that made him one of the most electric arms in the game.
The price was right, too. Pittsburgh sent a couple of prospects to the Giants, but none are considered untouchable. For a team fighting for a wild-card spot, this is a low-risk, high-reward gamble. If Doval can simply throw strikes and lean on his wipeout stuff, he instantly becomes the most feared arm in their late-inning mix. If he continues to walk batters and serve up home runs, the Pirates are no worse off than they were before. The grade here is a solid B-plus, not because Doval is a sure thing, but because the cost was reasonable and the potential payoff is significant. The real test starts now, with every high-leverage situation from here on out.
