Ohio has a unique opportunity to enhance the financial landscape for its student athletes. With the anticipated revenue from the new tax on sports gambling projected to be substantial, the state could allocate these funds to abolish the pay-to-play fees that burden many families. Currently, these fees can reach up to $800 per sport, creating a barrier for students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities.
By redirecting just a fraction of the tax revenue generated from sports betting, Ohio could ensure that all students have equal access to sports programs, regardless of their financial background. This initiative would not only promote inclusivity but also foster a healthier, more active lifestyle among the youth.
Governor DeWine has the chance to prioritize the needs of Ohio’s students over the interests of professional teams like the Bengals and Browns. Investing in the future of young athletes should be a primary concern, and eliminating these fees would be a significant step in the right direction.
