Which Player Can Salvage Giants' Season?

The San Francisco Giants are in the middle of a 2026 campaign that has gone off the rails. With a record well below .500 and injuries piling up, the playoff hopes that flickered in April have all but died out. But while the team's overall performance has been a disaster, individual players still have a chance to salvage something meaningful from the wreckage.

One name stands out: shortstop Marco Luciano. After years of hype and a rocky transition to the majors, Luciano has finally started to look like the hitter the front office envisioned. His power has returned, and he is making hard contact consistently. If he can sustain this production through the dog days of summer, he will give the Giants a legitimate building block for next year.

Another candidate is rookie pitcher Hayden Birdsong. The Giants' rotation has been a mess, but Birdsong has flashed ace-level stuff in his last few starts. He needs to prove he can handle a full season workload and refine his command. If he does, he becomes the anchor of the staff.

Beyond the young players, veteran Matt Chapman has a role to play. His defense has never been the question, but his bat has gone cold at the worst times. A strong second half from Chapman would not only boost his trade value but also set a professional example for a clubhouse that is starting to lose its way.

The Giants are not going to the postseason. That much is clear. But a few key players can still turn this lost season into a foundation for the future.
