The Boston Red Sox will be without shortstop Trevor Story for an extended period after he underwent surgery for a sports hernia. The team announced that the procedure was performed on Friday, and Story is now expected to miss several weeks of action. This is a significant blow to a Red Sox club that has already struggled to find consistency early in the season.
Story, who signed a six-year, $140 million contract with Boston before the 2022 season, has not lived up to expectations. He is hitting just .203 with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 34 games this year, and his defense has been uncharacteristically shaky. The injury comes at a time when the 30-year-old was trying to find his rhythm after missing the start of the season while recovering from an elbow injury.
The Red Sox will now turn to utility infielder Pablo Reyes and top prospect Ceddanne Rafaela to handle shortstop duties. Reyes has been a reliable fill-in, but Rafaela, known for his elite defensive skills, may get a longer look. Manager Alex Cora said the team will evaluate the situation day by day but acknowledged the loss of Story is a setback for the infield.
Story's absence could also open the door for other roster moves, as the Red Sox continue to hover around .500 in a competitive American League East. The team has been searching for offensive production from the middle infield, and without their starting shortstop, the pressure will increase on veterans like Justin Turner and Rafael Devers to carry the lineup.
Story is expected to begin a rehab program once he is cleared to resume baseball activities, but there is no firm timeline for his return. The Red Sox hope he can come back healthy and finally deliver on the promise of his big contract.
