After more than a decade leading Virginia Tech’s athletic department, Whit Babcock has announced his retirement as athletics director, effective immediately. Babcock, who took the helm in 2014, will transition into an advisory capacity, ensuring a smooth handoff to his successor. The move marks the end of a transformative era for Hokies sports, during which Babcock oversaw significant facility upgrades, coaching hires, and competitive successes across multiple programs.
During his tenure, Babcock guided Virginia Tech through the challenges of conference realignment, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the evolving landscape of college athletics, including the rise of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals. He was instrumental in securing major donations for facility renovations, including upgrades to Lane Stadium and the construction of the Merryman Athletic Center. Babcock also made high-profile coaching hires, including football’s Brent Pry and basketball’s Mike Young, who led the men’s team to an ACC regular-season title in 2022.
In a statement, Babcock expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Hokie community. “It has been the honor of my career to work alongside such dedicated coaches, staff, and student-athletes,” he said. “I am proud of what we have built together and confident in the future of Virginia Tech athletics.” University officials have not yet announced a timeline for naming a permanent replacement, but Babcock will remain involved in an advisory role to assist with the transition. His retirement closes a chapter defined by steady leadership and a commitment to academic and athletic excellence.
