Democrats block SAVE America Act amendment to bar transgender athletes in women’s sports

In a party-line vote on Saturday, Senate Democrats defeated a Republican-sponsored amendment to the SAVE America Act that sought to prohibit transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women's scholastic sports. The proposed measure, which needed 60 votes to advance, failed to gain any Democratic support.

The amendment aimed to enforce a blanket ban on transgender women and girls competing on teams consistent with their gender identity. Proponents argued the measure was necessary to ensure fairness and protect opportunities for cisgender female athletes, framing it as an issue of competitive integrity.

Opponents of the amendment condemned it as discriminatory and harmful, asserting that it unfairly targeted transgender youth and would deny them the benefits of team participation.
