While the NFL world has been watching the contract standoffs involving young star running backs like Bijan Robinson and Jahmyr Gibbs, another significant negotiation is quietly brewing in Indianapolis. Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, who has been the focal point of the offense since his breakout rookie season, may be on the verge of a new deal that looks different from the massive extensions handed out to other top backs.
According to league insiders, the Colts and Taylor's representatives have discussed a two-year extension that would keep him in Indianapolis through the 2026 season. This shorter-term approach would give Taylor immediate financial security while allowing him to hit the market again before he turns 28, a critical age for running backs. The structure makes sense for both sides. The Colts avoid committing five or six years to a player at a position with a short shelf life, and Taylor gets a chance to prove he is still elite after missing significant time last season with a high ankle sprain.
Taylor, who led the league in rushing in 2021 with 1,811 yards, has seen his workload and efficiency dip since then. But he remains a powerful, patient runner who fits perfectly in Shane Steichen's outside zone scheme. A two-year deal would also align with the team's competitive window, as quarterback Anthony Richardson develops. If Taylor stays healthy and productive, he could command a bigger payday down the road. If not, the Colts limit their risk. It is a pragmatic solution for a team that wants to win now without overpaying later.
