The Oklahoma Sooners' football staff is facing a significant change as running backs coach DeMarco Murray is set to leave the collegiate ranks for a professional opportunity. The former Sooner star and NFL Pro Bowl running back is reportedly finalizing a deal to join the coaching staff of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Murray, who played for Oklahoma from 2007 to 2010 and remains the program's all-time leader in all-purpose yards, returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2022. In his two seasons overseeing the running backs room, he was credited with developing young talent and was a valued recruiter, known for his ability to connect with players given his illustrious playing career.
His departure creates a key vacancy on head coach Brent Venables' staff. The search for a replacement will be crucial, as the Sooners aim to maintain their offensive momentum entering their second season in the competitive Southeastern Conference. Murray's move marks a return to the NFL, where he enjoyed a prolific seven-year playing career, and represents a notable career advancement on Andy Reid's staff with the reigning Super Bowl champions.
